Refunds may be restricted if the multi-ride ticket was paid for with a tax-free transit subsidy. No refund or exchange credit is given if a customer boards a train at a station beyond, or detrains at a station before, the station from or to which he or she was reserved, or if the customer downgrades accommodations on the train. To receive a fare adjustment the customer must change the reservation before the train departs the original boarding station of that train. This restriction will not apply if there is a service disruption.
Customers who downgrade accommodations or reduce the number in their party on board trains must obtain a Refund Authorization Form from the conductor. Refund rules are applied based on the scheduled departure for the first segment in a trip and are calculated for the total fare paid for each trip. A "trip" is a grouping of continuous travel. Amtrak Stations: Refunds may be processed at stations with Amtrak ticket offices. Mail: Requests of refunds for cash must be sent in via mail.

USA Rail Passes allow multiple trips during a set time frame. Amtrak requires valid photo identification for passengers 18 years old and older.
You will need ID if you purchase your tickets from a ticket agent or on board and when train personnel do random ticket checks. If you lose your ticket, you must buy a new ticket for travel, but you can request a refund from Amtrak up to a year from the date you purchased the ticket.
If your train travel takes you across the Canadian border, you will need to provide Amtrak with detailed information when you purchase your ticket.
